Strange Times

Hi everyone, sorry we have been quiet recently. We seem to have had a hectic few months but we hope to keep you more up to date with what is going on in the future.

At the moment as I'm sure you're aware we are having to reduce our milk production. Every farm is different and there are many different milk contracts out there that are all tackling the over supply differently. We are lucky and our buyer has told us just to cut production by 3% which isn't ideal but it is perfectly achievable.

So what have we done?

Well first of all we have put a sign on the bulk tank to let our tanker driver know how much milk to collect each day.

Secondly we have decided to temporarily stop feeding milk replacer to calves and feed whole milk which is something that we have been wanting to trial for some time.

we have also decided to slow our late lactation cows down a bit by reducing their feed rate and making them work a bit harder from forage. We have also put this later lactation group on 12hr milking intervals instead of 3x. We felt this was better than stopping our fresh and breeding groups from fulfilling their potential and having a negative impact on fertility and future performance and of course we are enjoying all of the benefits of our homemade superfood by having an extra couple of pints a day and lots of pancakes, Yorkshire puddings and rice pudding.

We hope you are all managing to look after yourselves.

Stay Safe!!
